嗨，我是句读 Kotori。我休学了，然后做了个多文种字体。这是我的故事。

2020 年，我进了学院。虽然我对节目制作感兴趣，家里人要求我去计算机网络技术专业。我感到失落。我试着加入了学校的融媒体中心，但失败了。班上很多同学性格顽劣，上课打电竞，搞得班上尽是噪声。他们中的一些人还以言语或肢体的方式霸凌我。终于，2021 年第三季度，我爆发了。学校建议我休学。

休学后，我在家里学了很多视觉相关的东西，尤其是字体。（21 年）第四季度，我进了人生中第一个字体相关 QQ 群。群主和管理员在做《遍黑体》，这套字体基于《思源黑体》，并补全中日韩越统一表意文字扩展区。这个群也是很多字体爱好者的社区，我见到了很多中文字体设计师，比如落霞孤鹜和荆南，他们的作品（字体）在中国内地很有名。这是他们的二维码。

2022 年，当我在 GitHub 冲浪的时候，偶然发现我可以通过修改《更纱黑体》的代码生成一套不同的字体，而原字体结合了《Inter》/《Iosevka》和《思源黑体》。然后我发现了《FiraGO》，这套字体不仅支持西文和国际音标，还支持阿拉伯文、天城文、格鲁吉亚文、希伯来文和泰文。然后我就想：要不合并《FiraGO》和《思源黑体》，以便做一个支持十几种文字的字体？于是，我 fork 并修改了《更纱黑体》，将《Inter》换成了《FiraGO》，于是，一套多文种开源字体诞生了。这就是《句读黑体》。

后来，作为湖南人，我添加了来自江永的书写系统——女书。女书字符来自《Noto 传统女书》字体。再后来，我见到了一套藏文字体叫《卡瓦柏簇无衬线体》，它使我感受到藏文字体的可能性，所以我用 FontTools 合并了《卡瓦柏簇无衬线体》而没有丢掉 OpenType 特性。如今，《句读黑体》支持约 14 种文字以及全球成百种语言，只需 1 个文件。它还支持 4 种汉字写法、7 个字重和 2 个倾斜度（是否倾斜）。您可以在 GitHub 下载。

我将《句读黑体》投稿到了猫啃网，一个商用免费中文字体信息网站，也是一个中国的字体爱好者的社区。之后，我得以有机会见到更多字体设计师，他们后来成为了我的好友。我也更加着迷字体，学到了其中的点点滴滴。我感到字体在治愈我，也找到了人生的意义。今年，《句读黑体》也被一位 UP 主推荐了。

2022 年第三季度之后，我回学校了，虽然我还是得把计算机网络技术给学完。然后我 23 年 2 月开始了实习，6 月毕业。为了奖励自己，我从长沙搭上了到杭州的火车，只为参加阿里巴巴 U 设计周。我见到了两家字体公司：汉仪和方正。那次经历是真的美好。我在 B 站上传了 Vlog。

那次休学让我对字体更加着迷，让我找到了人生意义。所以，还有个东西。2022 年，森泽将《BIZ UDGothic》开源了。这是一套日语通用设计黑体。那时，猫啃网社区想要个简体中文版本，但没人感兴趣。两年后，在我失业后——那工作跟字体没啥关系，我决定接手了，这就是《猫啃夕颜黑》。

我没有从日语字体补全简化字的经验，所以我的经验没有参考的必要。我从猫啃网的测试文本着手，需要补 21 个字儿。我也补了简化字版《世界人权宣言》第一条缺失的字儿。也试了长文本。我进展缓慢，但幸运的是，我在猫啃网社区里的一些朋友愿意在他们考完试后帮助我。虽然我不是原字体设计师，这对我来说是个练习做字的机会。项目与今年正式启动，可能会在 2027 年补完《通用规范汉字表》。

初中的时候，诗人汪国真离世了。他曾在诗中说道：“既然选择了远方，便只顾风雨兼程。‌‌‌”这也是为什么我对字体热情不息。

Hi, I’m Kotori Judou. I took a break from school and made a multiscript typeface. Here’s my story.

In 2020, I entered the college. Although I was interested in TV Programme Production, my family asked me to go to the Computer Network major. I felt a sense of loss. I tried to join the Converged Media Centre of the college but failed. There were many naughty classmates who play video games during class and made a lot of noise. Some of them also bullied me, in verbal and physical ways. Finally, I broke out in the 3rd quarter of 2021. The college suggested me to take a break from school.

After I took a break from school, I studied various visual things at home, especially typefaces. In the 4th quarter, I joined my 1st typography QQ group chat. The administrators of the group chat were working on a typeface called Plangothic, it’s based on Source Han Sans and complements extension blocks for CJKV unified ideographs. The group chat is also a community for many typography fans, I met many Chinese type designers like LXGW and Kingnam, their works are famous in Chinese mainland. Here’re their QR codes.

In 2022, while browsing GitHub, I accidentally discovered that I could generate a different typeface by modifying the code of Sarasa Gothic, which combines Inter, Iosevka and Source Han Sans. Then I found FiraGO, a typeface that supports not only LGC, IPA, but also Arabic, Devanagari, Georgian, Hebrew and Thai. Then I had an idea: why not combine FiraGO and Source Han Sans, to make a typeface that supports a dozen of writing systems? So, I forked and modified Sarasa Gothic, replaced Inter with FiraGO, then, a multilingual open-source typeface was born. It’s called Judou Sans.

Later, as a human from Hunan, I added Nüshu, a writing system from Jiangyong County, Hunan Province. The Nüshu glyphs are from Noto Traditional Nüshu. Afterwards, I met a Tibetan typeface called KhaWa Sans, it gave me a sense of the possibilities of Tibetan typography, so I used fontTools to merge KhaWa Sans without losing OpenType features. Now, Judou Sans supports about 14 writing systems and hundreds of languages around the globe, in 1 single file. It also supports 4 CJK orthographies, 7 weights and 2 slants. I posted Judou Sans to Maoken.com, a Chinese free typeface information website, also a community for Chinese typography fans. After that, I had the opportunity to meet more type designers, who later became my friends. I’ve also become more interested in typefaces, learned more about the dribs and drabs of them. I felt typefaces healing me and found the meaning of life. This year, Judou Sans is also recommended by a Bilibili uploader.

After the 3rd quarter of 2022, I went back to school, although I still have to learn Computer Network. Then I started my internship in February 2023 and graduated in June. To reward myself, I took a train from Changsha to Hangzhou, in order to attend the Alibaba U design week. I met 2 famous Chinese type foundries: Hanyi and Foundertype. It was an amazing experience. I posted the vlog on Bilibili.

The experience of taking a break from school has made me more interested in typefaces and has helped me find the meaning of life. So, I have one more thing. In 2022, Morisawa made BIZ UD Gothic open source. It’s a Japanese universal design sans-serif typeface. At that time, the Maoken.com community wanted a Simplified Chinese version of it, but no one was interested. 2 years later, after losing my job which has almost nothing to do with type design, I decided to take the job, and that’s Maoken UD Sans.

I don’t have any experience in making Simplified Chinese ideographs from a Japanese typeface, so my experience isn’t necessarily for reference. I started with the sample text on Maoken.com, which needs to create 21 ideographs. I also made some ideographs for the 1st article of UDHR, and a long text. My progress is slow, but luckily, some of my friends from the Maoken.com community are willing to help me after their exams. Although I didn’t design the original typeface, it’s an opportunity for me to practice designing CJKV ideographs. The project was formally started this year and may be completed in 2027 by supplementing the List of Commonly Used Standard Chinese Characters.

When I was in junior high school, a Chinese poet called Wang Guozhen passed away. He once said in a poem: “‌I will only struggle ahead as long as I have been destined to the distance.‌‌‌” And that’s why I won’t stop my passion for typography.
